Defunct domestic abuse charity told to pay former employee more than £5,000

A recently closed domestic abuse charity has been ordered to pay a former employee more than £5,000 after failing to pay their full redundancy payment, an employment tribunal has ruled.

Glasgow East Women’s Aid, which is in the process of liquidation, previously suspended the majority of its staff after allegations of bullying in the workplace.

The charity sent 13 of its 17 employees home in September 2023 following the allegations, but at the time the organisation denied they had been suspended, saying they were sent home to “protect staff and service users”.

The GEWA announced its plans to close in February last year and appointed a provisional liquidator from the insolvency company McLenan Corporate in April 2024.

After the closure, the Scottish government said former MP for Glasgow East David Linden and MSP Neil Gray had received concerns about staffing issues at GEWA.

A Scottish employment tribunal has since ordered the GEWA to pay £3,098 to one of its former employees, referred to as Mrs C Elliott, after finding that she had not received her full redundancy payment of £10,816.

According to the tribunal, just £7,719 was received by the claimant from the Redundancy Payments Service.

The tribunal also found that the claimant was dismissed in breach of contract in respect of notice and ordered the GEWA to pay a further sum of £2,065 in damages.

The charity was ordered to pay the dismissed employee an additional £25.90 for an unauthorised deduction from her wages.

The GEWA’s liquidators at McLenan Corporate have been contacted for comment.
