Hospice charity appoints next chief
St Joseph’s Hospice has appointed Rachel Black as its next chief executive.
She succeeds Tony McLean, who has retired after almost six years in the role.
Black joins the charity after spending five years as chief executive of The Orpheus Centre, a performing arts charity that supports young disabled adults.
She was also director of care at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice and spent 11 years at Demelza Hospice Care for Children as a nurse consultant, head of clinical education and a lecturer-practitioner.
She has a background in education having lectured and examined at several universities since 1995, including five years as a lecturer at the University of Leeds.
“St Joseph’s and its people have an inspiring record of providing compassionate palliative and end-of-life care, personalised for each individual and those important to them,” she said.
“I am delighted to be joining the team and am looking forward to learning more about St Joseph’s rich history, and meeting patients, families, trustees, staff, volunteers and local communities.”
Jane Naismith will serve as interim chief executive until Black arrives in post later this year.
Naismith will then revert to her previous role as deputy chief executive, director of clinical services and registered manager.
Paddy McGuinness, chair of St Joseph’s Hospice, said: “Rachel brings a rare combination of proven strong organisational leadership skills, a deep experience of palliative care and a noteworthy contribution as a published researcher and lecturer.”
“Tony joined us in 2018 and has shown exceptional leadership throughout his term including the Covid pandemic and the more recent economic turbulence.
“While welcoming Rachel, we also mark Tony’s outstanding service with huge admiration and thanks.”
